The Numbers You Need to Go Full-Time on eBay (Australia)

Flippedit Aug 24, 2026 3 min read Watch on YouTube

Nine times out of ten, new sellers tell Matt they want eBay to be the full-time job. Work for yourself. Own your time.

The median Australian wage he used in the video is about $90,000 a year (the average gets pulled up by high earners; the median is the number most people actually live on). That is profit, not revenue.

Here is the one-person, garage-scale plan from the goal planner with those inputs.

The full-time plan at 40% margin

Assumptions Matt used:

  • Profit goal: $90,000 a year
  • Profit margin: 40% (high-end typical; most efficient stores sit 30–40%)
  • Average sale price: $50
  • Sell-through: 90% over 90 days
  • No team, no warehouse. A 5x3 single-car garage.

That plan needs:

  • $225,000 in eBay sales per year
  • 4,500 items at $50
  • 13 sales a day, or 87 a week, or 375 a month
  • About $600 of sales per day, $18,750 per month
  • $685 of asking price listed every day, including weekends, or about $4,800–$5,000 a week
  • Roughly 96 products a week if they really are $50 items

That is the version where the metrics on the left stay ideal. Move them and the listing quota blows out.

What happens when the metrics slip

Margin 30% (storage unit, a bit of help, more overhead): $300,000 in sales, $913 listed per day, $6,400 a week.

Sell-through 75% instead of 90%: $1,100 listed per day, $7,692 a week.

Margin 25% and sell-through 75%: $1,300 listed per day, $9,000 a week, $360,000 in sales. That is no longer a one-person garage. It is a team, which then knocks margin down again.

If you cannot hold 40% and 90%, the "quit your job" plan is a listing treadmill.

Your number might be $75,000 or $120,000. The planner is the same. Change the profit goal. Watch the listing quota.

The side-hustle version most people should start with

Matt's actual teaching default is $1,000 a month in true profit, not $90,000 a year.

Same 40% / $50 ASP / 90% STR:

  • List about $93 a day (often two products)
  • $639 a week
  • About $2,700 in sales
  • $1,000 true profit
  • $12,000 a year

That is a real side hustle. It is also how you practise the metrics before you try to replace a wage. If you want the other argument, we already wrote why going full-time too early is usually a bad idea.

How to run this on your own numbers

  1. Open the free goal planner
  2. Put in the profit you actually need, not a round number from YouTube
  3. Use your margin, ASP, and 90-day sell-through, not the ideal 40 / 50 / 90
  4. Read the daily listing dollar value. That is the job.
  5. If the quota looks like a second full-time job, lower the profit goal or raise ASP and STR. Do not "out-list" a 40% sell-through store.

Flippedit is what feeds those four inputs from live sales instead of guessing. Start free 7-day trial and see whether you are on the $1,000-a-month plan or accidentally on the $1,300-a-day listing plan.

The video walks the planner live, then the weekend solds. This page is the numbers.
